Lecture by Dr. Hind Arroub "Nine Years After the Arab Uprising: Freedom of Expression Still Not Welcome."

After the Arab Uprising in 2010/2011, expectations were high that the freedom of expression would be recognized more. Nevertheless, human rights organizations have been warning that the new Arab governments are continuing or reverting to the practices of the old regimes with regard to censorship and intimidation of journalists and activists.

Maecenata Foundation's Guest Scholar 2019, Moroccan Fulbright scholar, political scientist and human rights activist Dr. Hind Arroub, will in her lecture focus on questions like:
Have the expectations of more freedom of speech and information in the MENA region been fulfilled after the Uprisings? To what extent have they been enshrined in the new (draft) constitutions? What has been the role of the state media of the old regimes during and after the uprisings? Which (new) taboos and “red lines” exist today and how are these being challenged? Do new media contribute to the freedom of expression in the MENA region? This lecture is open to the general public.
