There are many different narratives about the history of Palestine, sometimes also referred to as the “Holy Land” etc. Against this background, we are inviting you to an online talk with
Prof. em. Dr. Basem L. Ra’ad
Al Quds University, Palestine
moderated by
Wolf R. Schwippert
Board member of DAFG
Tuesday, 13 July 2021
6 p.m. CEST
Online via Zoom
Language: English
Basem L. Ra’ad, Professor Emeritus Al-Quds University, received his BA and MA at the American University of Beirut and Ph.D. in English from the University of Toronto. He has taught at universities in Canada, Bahrain, Lebanon and Palestine and has initiated various community and academic projects, in addition to organizing major international conferences. His publications include articles in such journals as PMLA, American Literature, Modern Fiction Studies, American Speech, and Leviathan: Journal of Melville Studies on topics related to literature, linguistics, landscape aesthetics, cultural studies, travel writing and history.
His book Hidden Histories: Palestine and the Eastern Mediterranean (available in revised Arabic as “et tarikh el khafi”) provides alternative readings into the long history of a region commonly called “the Middle East,” “the cradle of civilization,” and “the Holy Land.”
The online event will focus on the discoveries and scholarship that have made it possible to revise a range of historical, religious and cultural preconceptions (the Dead Sea Scrolls, Ugarit, and others), challenge dominant claims on the history of Palestine and offer new prospects for research into a people's history.
The online event will be conducted as a video conference using the software "Zoom". The number of participants is limited. Please register online here: https://tinyurl.com/2e3h2esk . After registering you will receive the corresponding access data.
For more information, please see the invitation.
