Since the 1960s, Tunisian and German archaeologists have been working together in the important ancient city of Simitthus (now Chimtou) in north-western Tunisia. The site gains its special significance from the combination of an ancient city with the large marble quarries of the so-called Numerian marble, which were in imperial possession in Roman times.
