DAFG Jour Fixe mit Amal, Berlin!: New voices in local journalism

Local journalism in Arabic, Farsi and Dari? The project Amal, Berlin! was founded in 2017 as an Online News plattform with up to date reporting on local news, current affairs and events in Berlin in Arabic and Dari/Farsi. Currently, there are 10 journalists from Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and Egypt working at the offices of Amal, Berlin!. They cover a wide range of topics and issues: From daily life in kindergartens to what's going in the Berlin town hall and the sprawling and diverse cultural scene in Berlin. Just recently,  the project opened a second branch, Amal, Hamburg!.

In our 19th DAFG Jour Fixe, we will talk to Julia Gerlach, project manager of Amal, Berlin!, and Khalid Alaboud, who covers the encounters of newer and longer-time residents in daily life, about the project‘s origins and idea, the editorial work in a news room that brings together so many different nationalities and sensitivities  as well as about how the project has been perceived so far and what challenges have emerged along the way.
