Business Breakfast: "Berlin meets Amman"

Amman, die Hauptstadt Jordaniens, ist für viele nach wie vor ein unbeschriebenes Blatt, das zudem seit Beginn des syrischen Bürgerkrieges zumeist im Kontext der Flüchtlingsthematik auftaucht. Dabei wird oft übersehen, dass in der Stadt eine prosperierende Start-up-Szene entstanden ist. Im Rahmen des bereits vierten gemeinsamen Business Breakfasts von enpact und der DAFG – Deutsch-Arabischen Freundschaftsgesellschaft e.V., am 30. August 2017 in der DAFG-Geschäftsstelle, stellten enpact‘s Alex Kovbasko und Niklas Marzinek den Standort Amman sowie die im Dezember anstehende enpact-Delegationsreise nach Jordanien vor – eine großartige Möglichkeit für interessierte Berliner Unternehmer*innen, spannende Menschen und Projekte kennenzulernen. Zudem berichtete Nada Hanieh, Alumni des enpact-Mentoringprogamms, via Skype von ihren persönlichen Vor-Ort-Erlebnissen und gab einen Überblick zu den jüngsten Trends und Entwicklungen.

Nach Kairo, Beirut und Dubai, steht nun im Dezember (11.-14.) der Besuch einer weiteren Nahost-Metropole an, in der aufstrebende Unternehmer*innen (30% davon weiblich) eine Vielzahl von Projekten ins Leben gerufen haben – von frühen Vorreitern wie Maktoob (mittlerweile aufgekauft von Yahoo) bis zu jüngeren Plattformen wie ShopGo oder CashBasha – und deren IT-Sektor eine jährlich Wachstumsrate von 25% aufweist. Ein weiterer Schub ist in Aussicht, da die jordanische Regierung erst kürzlich ein zinsgünstiges Weltbank-Darlehen erhalten hat, das in die Start-up Szene fließen soll. Neben öffentlichen Mitteln sind es vor allem lokale Investoren, sogenannte „angel investors“, die für den Kapitaleinfluss sorgen. Eine besondere Rolle spielt dabei die Förderplattform Oasis500, die bereits zahlreiche Projekte mit Startkapital versorgen konnte.

Amman, Jordan, for many is still relatively unknown territory. Also, since the beginning of the Syrian Civil War, country and city are often only mentioned in the context of the global refugee-crisis. One aspect which is overlooked too often is thereby Amman’s emerging start-up scene. On August 30, 2017, the already fourth DAFG-business breakfast with enpact took place in the Berlin-based DAFG-office. Enpact’s Alex Kovbasko and Niklas Marzinek introduced the start-up hub Amman and promoted  the upcoming enpact-delegation trip to Amman in December – a great opportunity for interested entrepreneurs to explore an exciting environment and to get in touch with locals and their projects. Additional first-hand insights were provided via Skype by enpact mentoring-alumni Nada Hanieh who chatted about recent trends and development.

With the forthcoming trip (December 11-14), enpact continues its tour of start-up hubs in the MENA-region (previously, Cairo, Beirut, Dubai were visited). Amman witnessed the rise of many start-ups over the recent years – from the pioneers of Maktoob (by now sold to Yahoo) to young platforms like ShopGo and CashBasha. Jordan is an extremely young country (median age is 22) and has a rapidly growing IT-sector (25% per annum). Also, women account for a noteworthy 30% of the tech sector.
Moreover, Jordan just received a considerable low-interest loan from the World Bank which is set to be invested into the start-up scene. So-called “angel investors” are the main source of funding next to governmental investment. For instance, Oasis500, one of the key-business incubators and -accelerator, is particularly active in the creative industry.
