Enpact Business Breakfast - Berlin meets Dubai

Am Freitagmorgen, den 3. Februar 2017, lud die DAFG –  Deutsch-Arabische Freundschaftsgesellschaft e.V. zum zweiten Mal in ihr Berliner Büro zum Business Breakfast mit den Startup-Experten von enpact ein. Im Mittelpunkt der Veranstaltung stand dabei Dubai. Warum die Metropole einzigartige Businessbedingungen bietet und Startups aus aller Welt anzieht, erklärte Zaen Hamid. Der head of operations des Unternehmens Astrolabs ist bestens in der Startup-Szene Dubais vernetzt und stellte die dortigen Standortvorteile ausführlich dar. Für alle, die selbst in Dubais lebhaftes Geschäftsfeld eintauchen möchten, organisiert enpact eine für den 3. bis 8. April geplante Delegationsreise, die während des Business Breakfast präsentiert wurde. Das anschließende gemeinsame Frühstück bot eine gute Möglichkeit, Networking zu betreiben und sich mit anderen jungen Unternehmern und Investoren auszutauschen.

Eingeleitet wurde die Veranstaltung durch Alex Kovbasko, die das Konzept von enpact genauer vorstellte. Der Verein betreut und unterstützt Startups durch Mentoring-Programme, Analysen zu verschiedenen Wirtschaftsregionen und zahlreiche Networking-Angebote. Alex Kovbasko brachte es sehr treffend auf den Punkt: „enpact is all about connections“. Passend dazu wurde zu dem Business Breakfast Zaen Hamid von Astrolabs aus Dubai zugeschaltet. Astrolabs hat sich das Ziel gesetzt, in der MENA-Region ein lebendiges, ausgebautes technology ecosystem aufzubauen und Unternehmern zu helfen, Schwierigkeiten beim Auf- und Ausbau ihrer Startups zu überwinden.

Dubai, eine Stadt der Extreme, ist aus vielfältigen Gründen ein attraktiver Anlaufpunkt für junge Unternehmen. Nicht nur das größte Hotel und die größte Shoppingmall der Welt befinden sich in Dubai, auch die größte Graffitiwand der Welt kann man dort besuchen. Was für Startups aber interessant ist, ist Dubais Rolle als Handelszentrum und Zugangspunkt zur ganzen Region. Gegenüber etablierten Technologie- und Industriestandorten kann Dubai damit punkten, dass das Businessumfeld sich noch mitten in der Entwicklung befindet und neue Unternehmen daher weniger Konkurrenz als zum Beispiel im Silicon Valley fürchten müssen. Geschäfte werden in Englisch abgewickelt und auch die Steuerfreiheit, von der man in Dubai profitiert, ist ein entscheidender Faktor. Die Regierung unterstützt den aufkommenden Unternehmergeist und hat sich die Mission auferlegt, Dubai bis 2020 zur „smartest city“ zu machen und fördert daher neue Technologien und Unternehmen. Kein Wunder, dass Dubai unter diesen Voraussetzungen das größte Investitionsvolumen der Region aufweist. Zaen Hamid hat in der an den Vortrag anschließenden Fragerunde jedoch auch darauf hingewiesen, dass die Lebenshaltungskosten in Dubai sehr hoch sind und neue Startups mit wenig Kapital Schwierigkeiten haben können, Fuß zu fassen. Er empfahl daher, vor einer Unternehmensgründung in Dubai mit Hilfe von Investoren Kapital aufzubauen und zu versuchen, sich vor Ort ein Netzwerk bilden, auf das man zurückgreifen kann.

Ein weiteres Thema des Vormittags war die im April stattfindende Delegationsreise, bei der enpact gemeinsam mit Unternehmern  und Investoren nach Dubai reist, um die dreitägige Step Conference zu besuchen. Niklas Marzinek erklärte dazu, dass die Veranstaltung die größte Technologie-Messe der Region ist und mehr als 6000 Menschen zusammenbringt. Dabei nehmen nicht nur Geschäftsleute teil, sondern auch Künstler, Journalisten und andere kreative Köpfe sind vertreten.  Neben der Konferenz bietet die Reise Gelegenheit, weitere in Dubai ansässige, erfolgreiche Startups wie Astrolabs kennenzulernen.

Nach dem vielen Input zur Startup-Szene in Dubai konnten die Teilnehmenden selbst aktiv werden und sich bei Kaffee und Brötchen austauschen und vernetzen. So sind viele neue Kontakte und Ideen für mögliche gemeinsame Projekte entstanden, die nicht nur deutsche und arabische Startups zusammenbringen, sondern auch den kulturellen Austausch fördern.

Enpact Business Breakfast - Berlin meets Dubai

On Friday morning, on the 3rd February 2017, the German-Arab Friendship Association (DAFG) hosted for the second time enpact’s Business Breakfast in its offices. The event focused on Dubai as a start-up hotspot. Zean Hamid explained why the metropolis offers unique business opportunities and attracts start-ups from all over the world. The head of operations for Astrolabs is very well connected within Dubai’s start-up scene and outlined its locational advantages. Everyone who would like to experience Dubai’s vivid business environment by him or herself, is invited to join enpact’s delegation trip from 3rd to 8th April. The trip was presented during the event by enpact’s Niklas Marzinek. The following breakfast offered a great opportunity for networking and exchange with other young entrepreneurs and investors.

The event was introduced by Alex Kovbasko, who presented the idea of enpact in detail. The NGO advises and supports start-ups through mentoring programs, analysis of different entrepreneurial ecosystems and various networking offers. Alex Kovbasko summarized it very well: “enpact is all about connections”. Subsequently, Zaen Hamid from Astrolabs in Dubai joined the Business Breakfast via Skype. Astrolabs’ mission is to create a flourishing, well-developed technology ecosystem in the MENA region and to help businesses overcome difficulties during the establishment and development of their start-ups.

Dubai, a city of extremes, is for many reasons an attractive place to go to. Not only the tallest hotel and the biggest shopping mall in the world are to be found there, also the largest graffiti can be visited in Dubai. However, for start-ups the interesting point about Dubai is its role as trade center and gateway for the whole region. Compared with well-established technology and industry locations, Dubai offers certain advantages such as the fact that its business environment is currently still developing. Therefore, upcoming enterprises have to fear less competition as for example in Silicon Valley. The language of business is English and the prevailing tax exemptions are another crucial factor that contributes to Dubai’s economic attractiveness. Moreover, the government is supporting the upcoming business spirit and has set up the goal to make Dubai the smartest city by 2020 and therefore promotes new technologies and enterprises. Not surprisingly, Dubai features the highest investment volume in the region. Nevertheless, Zaen Hamid indicated in the round of questions following the presentation, that the cost of living in Dubai is very high. Consequently, new start-ups having little capital at their disposal might face difficulties joining the market. Therefore, he recommended to build up capital with the help of investors and to create a network of supporters on the ground before establishing a business in Dubai.

Another topic during the Business Breakfast was the delegation trip taking place in April. On the trip, enpact is travelling together with entrepreneurs and investors to Dubai in order to visit the three-day Step Conference. Niklas Marzinek explained that this event is the biggest technology fair in the region and brings together more than 6000 people. Not only businessmen are participating, but also artists, journalists and other creative minds are going to attend the event. In addition to visiting the conference, the trip offers participants the opportunity to meet other successful start-ups based in Dubai such as Astrolabs.

Following the high amount of input on Dubai’s start-up scene, the participants enjoyed the opportunity to exchange and network with fresh coffee and bread rolls at hand. Many new contacts and ideas for possible common projects emerged from this breakfast and do not only bring together German and Arab start-ups but also promote cross-cultural cooperation.
