Enpact Business Breakfast - Berlin meets Beirut

Erstmalig fand am Morgen des 11. Januars 2017 ein Business Breakfast in den Räumen der DAFG – Deutsch-Arabische Freundschaftsgesellschaft e.V. statt. Unsere Partner von enpact konnten den erfolgreichen Mitgründer, CTO und Chefentwickler von EyeEm, Ramzi Rizk, für unser Podium gewinnen. Bei frischen Brötchen und heißem Kaffee nutzten die Teilnehmenden die Gelegenheit, sich zu vernetzen und für enpacts Delegationsreise nach Beirut vom 20.-25. Februar 2017 begeistern zu lassen.

Nach einer kurzen Begrüßung und Vorstellung der DAFG e.V. leitete Alex Kovbasko die Diskussion mit Ramzi Rizk, der von der Startup-Szene in Beirut berichtete und Bezüge zur Szene in Berlin und dem Silicon Valley herstellte. Im Libanon geboren, kam Rizk für sein Masterstudium nach Deutschland und gründete 2010 in Berlin die mittlerweile größte unabhängige Fotografen-Plattform der Welt. Rizk betonte, dass EyeEm eine der wenigen sozialen Plattformen ist, die ihren Nutzern Gewinne auszahlt, anstatt über Werbung Geld mit ihnen zu verdienen. EyeEm bietet seinen Nutzern die Gelegenheit, ihre Fotos weltweit auf den Markt zu bringen und an internationalen Festivals und Wettbewerben teilzunehmen.

In der Diskussion betonte Rizk, dass Beiruts Jugend sich durch eine ausgeprägte Gründermentalität und den Hunger auf Innovationen auszeichne und damit ein nahezu ideales Umfeld für Startups bildet. Die interessierten und detaillierten nachfragen der Gäste ermöglichten eine Vertiefung des Gesprächs auf Aspekte wie die Rolle des angesehenen libanesischen Bankenwesens, die Zentrierung der Startup-Szene auf den Beirut Digital District und die Zugänglichkeit der Szene für junge Libanesen, die keiner Elite angehören.

Im Anschluss an die Diskussion stellte Niklas Marzinek das Programm der Delegationsreise vor, mit der enpact Gründer und Investoren aus Deutschland und der MENA-Region gemeinsam für 5 Tage nach Beirut bringt. In Beirut erwartet die Teilnehmenden ein volles Programm gespickt mit Netzwerktreffen, Workshops und Konferenzen. Besucht werden unter anderen ZRE, Berytech, IM Captial, LEAP Ventures, die Lebanese Economic Association, Speed@BDD und die ArabNet Conference. In entspannter Atmosphäre wurde zum Abschluss der morgendlichen Veranstaltung erneut die Gelegenheit genutzt, Erfahrungen auszutauschen und gemeinsame Projekte anzustoßen. Es zeigte sich auch bei dieser Veranstaltung, dass kultureller Austausch und wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit gerade im Startup-Bereich Hand in Hand gehen und gemeinsam die deutsch-arabische Freundschaft stärken.

Enpact Business Breakfast – Berlin meets Beirut

On the morning of 11 January 2017 a Business Breakfast was held at the German-Arab Friendship Association’s (DAFG) Office for the first time. Our partners from enpact were able to bring the successful Co-Founder, CTO and chief developer of EyeEm, Ramzi Rizk, to our podium. Fresh bread rolls and hot coffee at hand the participants took the opportunity to network and inform themselves on enpact’s delegation trip to Beirut from 20-25 February 2017.

After a short introduction of the DAFG enpact’s Alex Kovbasko led the discussion with Ramzi Rizk who spoke on the startup scene in Beirut and draw comparisons to the startup ecosystems in Berlin and Silicon Valley. Born in Lebanon Rizk came to Germany for his Master’s thesis and by 2010 co-founded the biggest photographer’s platform in the world here in Berlin. He emphasized that EyeEm is one of a few social platforms that actually pay rewards to their users instead of earning money with personalized advertisement. EyeEm offers its users the opportunity to connect with a worldwide platform of photographers and offer their pictures to customers around the world. Additionally EyeEm publishes its own magazine and organizes festivals, competitions and meetings.

In the discussion Rizk highlighted that Beirut’s youth has a great hunger for innovation and a pioneering spirit. Therefore Beirut is a fertile ground for startups across all branches. The focused remarks and questions of the guests enabled the discussion to go into detail on aspects like the role of the famous Lebanese banking system, the centralization of the startup ecosystem in Beirut’s Digital District and the accessibility of the ecosystem for less privileged parts of Lebanese youth.

Following the discussion enpact’s Niklas Marzinek presented the program of the delegation trip to Beirut. With the trip enpact aims to bring founders and investors from Germany and the MENA region together in order to visit Beirut’s buzzing startup scene. The participants awaits a tight program of network meetings, workshops and conferences. Among others the group will visit ZRE, Berytech, IM Captial, LEAP Ventures, the Lebanese Economic Association, Speed@BDD and the ArabNet Conference. More information on the trip can be found here. At the end of the event the guests once again used the opportunity to mingle, exchange experiences and discuss common projects. The event showed once more that cultural exchange and economic cooperation especially in the startup sector go hand in hand and together strengthen the German-Arab Friendship.
